americans. in benghazi, libya, visiting the ruins, charlie what did you see? >> reporter: well, nora, ruins is a good way to describe it, because the place has been decimated. every single building, every single room has been torched, everything inside smashed to pieces or taken out. really, there would have been no place to hide in that compound. when you talk to libyans here you hear the same thing. everybody is heartbroken. they're saddened, shocked by what's happened. they say that they're ashamed of what's happened. they say the ambassador is a personal friend to the libyans. he was here for growth, to show there is a stable future forelibya, ironically, and they held a pro-american rally last night here in benghazi to reinforce those sentiments. so, you know, even days after this event, there is a sense of shock, of anger at those behind it, and the investigation now continues to find out who was behind these killings. the libyans tell me this was directed by al qaeda. this could not have come out of anger from the libyan people. >> charlie, will we see a coordination between the fbi

more arrests in connection with the deadly protests in benghazi at our consulate last week and u.s. ambassador chris stevens and three other americans were killed in that attack on our american interests in ben gas and i this is what it looks like inside that building where the attacks happened. as many as 50 people now have been detained in connection with this, but it is believed that they may have just been protesters, not necessarily taking part in the killings and as they sort that out the libyan government says it was planned by al qaeda who used anger over the anti-muslim film as cover for their planned attack. the fbi is expected to investigate all of this, but the agents have not yet arrived in benghazi because it has not been deemed safe enough yet. so we are told. we now have some more information on the man behind the movie, if you want to call it a movie, the anti-islam slam that's been posted on youtube, at least a trailer of it, and now we have a photo behind that man. wrapped up as he was led out of his house for questioning and the photo was taken when he was sho

saw hundreds of vilks storming one of the headquarters of a known militant group in benghazi after they initially managed to peacefully take over that location, they then set their sights on a second area. this turned out to be a battalion that is, in fact, endorsed by the government. it did result in some clashes that caused injuries and casualties and then the army eventually in the early morning hours moved in, especially trying to remove massive weapons. we arrived on site and saw some of the heavy weaponry that the army was trying to secured. at one of the brigade headquarters, we saw a number of detainees that people said had been taken into custody in conjunction with the assault of that government-endorsed battalion headquarters. it certainly is a chaotic and volatile situation. many say this is part of the populations being fed up with the government's inability to reign in this tuation, trying to take the situation into their own hands. we were hearing late saturday night two more known militant bases had shut down, this time to the east. they have been monitoring it quit
